Ghana vs Nigeria: Players are scared to play for Black Stars because of insults – Legend Karim Zito

Africa-Press – Ghana. Former Ghana star Abdul Karim Zito insists some Ghanaians are to blame for some players’ reluctance to play for the senior national team even for crucial matches like the clash with Nigeria in the 200 World Cup playoff and other matches.

According to the coach, who guided Ghana to win the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Mauritania, players are scared to play for Black Stars because of insults they receive from fans of the Black Stars when things go wrong.

Several players including those born in the country and outside the country have recently been reluctant to play for Ghana with some opting for other nations and Zito says the insults comtribute.

“The media should have confidence in what we have. You can never be an European, Nigerian or Cameroonian. Whatever it’s you are a Ghanaian. let’s rally behind our team,” Zito said.

“It’s gotten to a time people don’t want to play for the Black Stars because of insults, which is very bad.”

“When we were playing for the national team the whole country was behind us. If the country will put everything aside, and support the Black Stars, I bet you, we will go places,” he advised.

In recent years, Ghana have had no luck in convincing highly-rated players such as Inaki Williams, Mohammed Salisu, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tariq Lamptey to play for the Black Stars.

These players can improve the team massively but they have shown little or no interest in representing Ghana.

Black Stars have a big assignment coming up later this month as they face Nigeria in the final round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Otto Addo’s squad should be ready by early next week for preparations to commence for the must-win tie.
