Africa-Press – Ghana. The Keta Municipal Assembly in the Volta Region has cautioned to punish individuals or group who would refuse to participate in the upcoming communal clean-up activities on the Municipal Sanitation Day to be observed on Saturday, August 9.
The Assembly has also announced that the maiden Municipal Sanitation Day would be observed across the entire municipality and all individuals and groups were expected to participate by cleaning up their immediate environments.
A press statement dated August 6, 2025, signed by Mr. Innocent Komla Gavua, the Municipal Coordinating Director, and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), stated that the clean-up exercise would take place from 0500 to 0800 hours in all communities in the municipality.
“No business premises shall be open or operate on the said day set aside for the clean-up exercise until everything is finished,” it stated.
Mr. Gavua said that business such as bar keepers, chop bar operators, market traders and shop or storekeepers were all expected to undertake the cleaning or flushing of markets, chop bars, shops, stalls in their various areas.
No commercial vehicle shall operate between the hours of 0500 and 0800 hours on the Environmental Sanitation Days except those permitted to do so.
“Lorry park personnel shall undertake the general cleaning of all lorry parks, taxi ranks and stations, and workers of offices, public or private commercial houses, and garages shall also undertake general cleaning.”
Mr. Gavua said that any person or group who would refuse to participate in communal clean-up activities shall be guilty of an offense and liable on conviction to a fine of not less than GH₵ 100 penalty unit which is equivalent to GH₵ 1200 or imprisonment for a term not less than 6 months and not more than 9 months or both.
He said that the Assembly therefore entreated that all residents of the municipality such as farmers, businesses, drivers, fisherfolks, among others led by revered traditional and religious leaders, assembly member and others must take part in the importance engagement.
Mr. Wisdom Seade, the Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), also stated that the Assembly would enforce all the necessary by-laws available to deal with those who would not participate in the exercise without permission.
He said that the Keta Municipal Assembly is further counting on the cooperation of all residents in the various electoral areas led by assembly members in the important municipal exercise and urged all to take part in the exercise to help maintain healthy and clean environment.
Th GNA also gathered that an official launching of the Municipal clean-up exercise would take place at Anlo-Afiadenyigba and would be led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Municipal Coordinating Director and Municipal Environmental officials would take part.
The clean-up exercise, being a national activity, is expected to be observed every first Saturday of each month of the year.
