Africa-Press – Ghana. The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Keta Municipality held a quiz for Basic schools to promote citizenship education, current affairs, the constitution, and general knowledge.
The quiz competition covered topics including current affairs, the constitution, and general knowledge, and was designed to test students’ understanding of these subjects.
Madam Elinam Lina Bensah, NCCE Director at Keta, highlighted the importance of the competition, stating that it would motivate students to learn more about their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
She emphasised that the quiz was part of the commission’s efforts to promote citizenship education and raise awareness among young people about their duties and responsibilities in national development.
“We have divided the schools into different zones, including Keta, Dzelukope, Vui, and Amugo, which cover Anyako, Abor, Tsiame, Atiavi, among other schools. We will schedule time to hold the competition in all the other zones,” she said.
At the Dzelukope zone, Dzelukope Presbyterian Evangelical Basic School emerged winners with 63 marks, followed by Ketasco Number 1 and 2, and Roman Catholic Basic Schools, which came second, third, and fourth with 54, 51, and 39 marks respectively.
Madam Bensah explained that the competition included both private and public schools, and the winners from each zone would meet at the grand finale for the ultimate prize.
“The competition is expected to promote a sense of patriotism and civic responsibility among the students, as well as encourage them to be more engaged in the democratic process,” she added.
She further stated that the NCCE planned to organise more quiz competitions and other activities to promote citizenship education in the area. The competition is also expected to help students develop critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills.
Madam Bensah reiterated that the NCCE is committed to promoting citizenship education and creating awareness among young people about their rights and responsibilities. She called on all stakeholders to support efforts to promote citizenship education in the Municipality.
The winners of the preliminary stage received prizes including exercise and textbooks, the Constitution book, and other materials to help them prepare for the grand finale.
Mr Hiram Ocloo, teachers from Ketasco Number schools, and other participating students engaged by the Ghana News Agency expressed joy over the exercise and looked forward to more such competitions in the future.
They praised the NCCE for organising the quiz competition, describing it as a welcome initiative to promote civic responsibility among the youth in Keta and beyond.
