Africa-Press – Ghana. The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has lauded Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, together with a list of Members of Parliament for pledging to donate their salaries to the National Sports Fund.
The National Sports Fund, passed in December 2025 was part of efforts by the government to create a structured and sustainable financing system for sports development in Ghana.
The Minister, while on the floor of parliament on Thursday 19 February, on the fund and its operational framework donated his two months’ salary to support the government’s agenda.
Among the lawmakers who joined the wave of support was Mr. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip, who pledged a generous three months of his salary and Mr. Dickson Kyere-Duah, SWAG’s Regional Vice Chairman in Brong Ahafo and MP for Berekum West.
A statement signed by Mr. Kwabena Yeboah, President of SWAG said the gesture was a bold demonstration of leadership and commitment to the development of sports in Ghana.
It said the donation had come at a critical time when the nation’s sports sector
required sustained financial backing to support athlete preparation, grassroots development, infrastructure maintenance, among others.
SWAG said the act by the Sports Minister and the Members of Parliament was a way of sending a powerful message about shared responsibility and national ownership of sports growth.
The Association further called on corporate Ghana, state-owned enterprises, financial institutions and private businesses to also contribute generously to the National Sports Fund.
“Sports is a national asset and a powerful tool for youth empowerment, social cohesion, and national pride. Supporting the National Sports Fund is an investment in Ghana’s future,” It said.
It said SWAG was ready to partner with stakeholders to advocate for
transparency, accountability, and effective utilization of the Fund to ensure that contributions translate into tangible benefits for athletes and the sports ecosystem.
