Africa-Press – Ghana. Residents in the Techiman Metropolis said they anticipated advancement in agriculture under President John Dramani Mahama’s government to spur rapid socio-economic growth and development in the Bono East Region.

They therefore called on President Mahama to appoint a Regional Minister, sensitive to the plight of farmers and with agriculture background to oversee the affairs of the region and thereby harnessed and tapped into the prospects of the agriculture sector in the region.

In an interview in Techiman, noted that a regional minister who understood the dynamics and potential of the agriculture sector could help modernised agriculture to improve and boost food productivity too.

As one of the food baskets of the nation, Mr Kwaku Agyapong a resident said, “Bono East needs a minister who understands the agricultural business and is sensitive to the welfare of farmers,” saying the region contributed about 70 percent to the nation’s cash and food crops.

He said advancement in agriculture would make commercial farming attractive and to woo many of the teeming unemployed youth into the sector.

Besides, Mr Anas Sabit, a media practitioner noted that the Techiman had a vibrant market, saying appointing an agriculture-oriented person as the regional minister would push economic growth and development.

With a background in agriculture, the minister would be able to bring investors into the agriculture potential and create jobs for the locals, he stated.

Madam Regina Amo Gyamfi, a fruit seller said fruit and vegetable farmers needed irrigation facilities, inputs, and financial assistance to engage in all-year farming, and called for the reshaping of roads linking farm gates in the area.

“It is only a minister with agriculture background that can do that for the farmers,” she stated, and urged the President to make extensive consultations before appointing the regional minister to meet the expectation of the people.
