Theophilus Allottey emerges as Ghana’s strongest hope for Olympic boxing qualification

Africa-Press – Ghana. Ghana’s Theophilus Kpakpo Allottey emerges as Ghana’s strongest contender for qualification at the WTQ Boxing Road to Paris 2024 Olympic games currently ongoing in Italy.

Affectionately known as Theo Lopez, he aims to sustain Ghana’s prospects with a victory when he steps into the ring later today.

His goal is to secure qualification for the Olympic Games and compensate for the premature exits of five other Black Bombers at the World Olympic Qualifiers in Busto Arsizio, notably including the unexpected elimination of Samuel Takyi, who clinched Africa’s sole boxing medal at the Tokyo Games.

“Another one bites the dust”

Theophilus Allotey, competing in the flyweight division, provided Ghana with a significant boost by securing an impressive unanimous points victory over World Championships quarter-finalist Tu Po-Wei of Taipei.

Hailing from the Wisdom Boxing Club in Accra, he is now poised to enter the ring to face Tashi Wangdi from Bhutan in the round of 16.

A victory for Theophilus would greatly enhance Ghana’s prospects, potentially making him the sole boxing representative at the Olympic Games in Paris this year.

Out of the seven boxers Ghana fielded for the qualifiers, five have already been eliminated, leaving just two contenders remaining.

Failure to qualify would mark a significant setback from the Olympic success of just four years ago.
