Africa-Press – Kenya. Defending champions Kabras Sugar RFC will host Menengai Oilers in a blockbuster Enterprise Cup semi-final at the Kakamega Showground, rekindling one of Kenyan rugby’s fiercest rivalries. The clash marks their second meeting this season, with Kabras having beaten Oilers 27-13 during the final round of the Kenya Cup pool phase in March.
Both sides booked their semi-final slots in emphatic fashion, brushing aside Ugandan opposition.
Kabras hammered Heathens RFC 61-19 in Kampala, while Oilers cruised past Buffaloes RFC 60-15 in Nakuru. The result sets up a high-stakes “Rai Derby”, with Oilers desperate to snap a 10-match losing streak against the sugarmen.
Kabras head coach Carlos Katywa says his side is refreshed and ready after a three-week break.
“We are well rested and ready to fire on all cylinders. Our development side went to the ten-a-side tournament and won, which shows the depth we have. Now we face a tough opponent who will be aiming for the final,” said Katywa.
The South African believes his team is hitting form at the right time as the season enters its decisive phase.
“I believe we are peaking well as we approach the home straight. We also have the Kenya Cup semi-final coming up, so the boys are in good shape,” he added.
Kabras will rely on a powerful forward pack led by hooker Eugene Sifuna, alongside Ephraim Oduor, Patrick Lumumba and long-serving skipper George Nyambua.
In the backs, the hosts will look to Jone Kubu, Griffin Chao, Walter Okoth and Eric Cantona to provide attacking spark. Oilers, on the other hand, will bank on skipper Ibrahim Ayoo, Jadah Abdon, Amos Obae and Fortune Aturo to anchor the forwards, while Samuel Mwaura, Phillip Okeyo and Timothy Omela will steer the backline.
Assistant coach Lawrence Buyachi says the outcome will hinge on physical dominance and decision-making.
“It will come down to who wins the set-piece battle, the collisions, and how well we take our chances,” he said.
The match kicks off at 3pm.
In the other semi-final, Nondescripts RFC face Ugandan side Pirates Rugby Club in Kampala, with the final scheduled for May 23 at the RFUEA Ground.
