Africa-Press – Kenya. USA-based Orion Onyango became the first diaspora player to join the Morans training camp ahead of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers in Senegal.

Assistant coach, Sadat Gaya, confirmed the guard had trained with the rest of the local-based players at Nyayo Stadium gymnasium.

“Yes Orion is here and he even trained with the rest of the boys yesterday. He is a guard and can be used both as a one-man or two-man,” he said.

Kenyans are in Group ‘D’ alongside DR Congo, Egypt, and hosts Senegal for the three-day tournament on February 25-27 in Dakar. Group B will feature Cameroon, Rwanda, Tunisia South Sudan.

Group ‘A’ and ‘C’ matches were played in Angola last November. Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) secretary, Ambrose Kisoi, said Jeff Mwaniki, a head coach from Kenya Academy of Sports is helping Gaya out.

“We are awaiting approval from the Ministry of Sports in order to set the camping date and come up with a proper itinerary,” Kisoi said.

Morans’ head coach Cliff Owuor was expected in the country last evening. The Kigali-based tactician said he was trying to round up his players in readiness for the tournament. Owuor, who handles Rwandese powerhouse APR replaced coach Liz Mills who was in charge during the FIBA AfroBasket also in Kigali.

He said a tentative list of 22 players has been forwarded to the continental body before a final list is unveiled. “We have also sent a tentative list of 22 players to choose from and God-willing, we should have our list of 15 by next week Wednesday,” he said.
