Kanu plans growth ahead of 2022

AfricaPress-Kenya: Independence party Kanu is working on growing its numbers at the grassroots ahead of next year’s General Election.

Party chair Gideon Moi, who met Kanu delegates from Kakamega County in Khwisero sub-County yesterday, said a membership recruitment drive mainly targeting women and young people would be launched soon.

The Baringo Senator said despite having a good working relationship with President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Amani leader Musalia Mudavadi and Wiper and Ford Kenya party leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula, he was committed to making Kanu a formidable force.

“It is important to strengthen our party at the grassroots, you must recruit new members and retain the old ones,” he said.

Gideon Moi also said that he would continue working closely with the leaders to make the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) a success.

He said he would be visiting counties to meet Kanu delegates.

“We have a committed and capable team ready to work with you in expanding our party network all over Kenya because there is a bright future for Kanu,” he said.

He also said that the party would field and bankroll candidates in the coming elections.

Moi regretted that Kanu had lost property worth Sh1.8 billion to grabbers “but we managed to recover property worth Sh4 million and our party lawyer will take over all cases involving the party.”

Chacha Weche, the Kanu Kakamega branch chair, said party property in Kakamega and Busia counties had either been grabbed or was at risk of being grabbed.

In October 2018, structures at the party offices in Kakamega town were demolished by the county government.

“They brought down about 16 business premises constructed on the one-acre plot owned by the party,” Weche said.

He said that another plot within Kakamega town valued at over Sh40 million was in danger of being grabbed.

But Senator Moi said there are efforts to recover all grabbed property and make Kanu offices operational.

The delegates had urged the party boss to consider opening party offices in the 12 sub-counties in order to attract more members.

Newly unveiled Kanu executive director George Wainana said the party wants to have at least 1,000 members in each one of the 60 wards in Kakamega.
