AfricaPress-Kenya: Former Kenya Premier League (KPL) champions Sofapaka appointed Ken Odhiambo as new head coach on Friday, The Standard Sport confirmed.
Upon his appointment, Odhiambo expressed his delight after joining Batoto ba Mungu stating he was ready for the new challenge.
“Am very delighted to join Sofapaka Club. This a big club and the ambitions are so clear, when the president talked to me I felt a good opportunity to join the club and help achieve her targets.
“The club has a good set of players who are very talented, skilful and of good quality, I believe they capable of achieving a lot,” Odhiambo pointed out.
“When the president reached out on me, his desires were so clear for the club and that is winning the title. This what made it easier for me to decide on joining the club,” the Harambee Stars assistant head coach added.
Odhiambo joins the club from coastal based side Bandari Football Club and will be deputised by coach Mike Muiruri.
He will take charge of the 2009 KPL champions after the exit of John Baraza. Baraza left the Wundanyi-based club after a poor start.
Sofapaka lost the 2020/21 season opener 1-0 against Bandari before they picked a 3-1 win against Western Stima.
The 3-0 loss at Kasarani against AFC Leopards marked the end of Baraza’s second reign at the club.
Sofapaka had an alarmingly remarkable season in 2009, having just been promoted from the Nationwide League for the first time and immediately winning the title. They also won the Kenyan Super Cup the following season.
Bandari and Agrochemical were relegated at the end of the season after replacing previously relegated Mahakama and Mathare Youth. However, Bandari gained promotion again for the 2011 season.
