Africa-Press – Lesotho. Lesotho has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment at the national, regional and global levels during its participation at the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70).
The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations, Mr. Matete ‘Nena, highlighted the country’s progress in strengthening social protection systems, promoting women’s participation in economic activities and addressing gender-based violence.
He further stressed the importance of data-driven policymaking as a critical tool for accelerating the implementation of global gender commitments.
During the same session, Lesotho, in collaboration with Eswatini and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), co-hosted a high-level side event titled, “Leveraging the African Gender and Development Index to Monitor and Report on Gender Equality Commitments.”
The event showcased the African Gender and Development Index (AGDI) as a key instrument for tracking progress across the social, economic and political dimensions of gender equality.
Ambassador ‘Nena emphasized that reliable and disaggregated data is essential for shaping effective policies, identifying persistent gaps and strengthening accountability in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union Agenda 2063 and the Beijing Platform for Action.
