Africa-Press – Lesotho. Young chess players from across Lesotho gathered on Saturday at Mabote LECSA Primary School to compete in the Moshoeshoe’s Day Junior Chess Tournament, an event aimed at celebrating the legacy of King Moshoeshoe I while promoting critical thinking and strategic skills among the youth.

The tournament attracted dozens of participants eager to showcase their talent and learn from one another in a friendly but competitive environment.

In an interview with the Agency, Mr. Khotso Motlomelo from the Sparrowhawks Chess Club said the purpose of the Junior Chess Tournament was to commemorate Moshoeshoe’s Day, noting that the event is held annually.

Mr. Motlomelo said the tournament brought together children from different districts including Butha-Buthe and Mohale’s Hoek.

He explained that the initiative aims to train young people to use their minds effectively, as chess helps improve decision making, problem solving skills and academic performance, particularly in subjects such as Mathematics.

He added that they want to introduce children to the game at an early age so that they can benefit from the mental and educational advantages that chess offers.

However, Mr. Motlomelo noted that one of the challenges they face is a lack of sponsorship, which limits their ability to expand the tournament and support more young players.

Mr. Motlomelo further explained that the Chess Federation of Lesotho conducts training sessions in different districts and schools and also organizes tournaments for high school students.

He said the tournament involved 40 boys and girls under the age of 14, with 12 children emerging as winners.

Mr. Motlomelo appealed to the Government of Lesotho to support chess clubs with resources in order to help expand the sport and reach young people in rural areas.
