Female Lone Star Reaches WAFU Semi-Finals After Strong Play

Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberia’s Women’s National Football Team, popularly known as the Female Lone Star, have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 WAFU Zone A Senior Women’s Championship, following a determined group stage performance that earned them second place in Group A.

Liberia secured five points from three matches, finishing behind group leaders Mali, who topped the group with seven points.

The journey to Mauritania was not without complications. The team, along with delegations from countries like Sierra Leone, experienced significant visa delays in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

These disruptions prompted tournament organizers to postpone the original start date from May 18 to May 22 to accommodate the delayed arrivals.

Despite travel-related setbacks and fatigue, Liberia remained composed and competitive. Their tournament began with a dramatic 3-1 comeback victory over Guinea Bissau. After trailing in the first half, Liberia equalized through Jessica Quachie before forward Mimi Eiden scored twice to seal the win.

In their second outing, Liberia battled hosts Mauritania to a 1-1 draw in a tense matchup that tested their defensive discipline.

The final group match against tournament favorites Mali was decisive. After conceding early, Liberia responded through Bandu Yantay’s equalizer in the first half to secure another 1-1 draw. The result ensured Liberia’s place in the knockout rounds.

Mali demonstrated their dominance in the group with a 5-0 win over Mauritania and a 4-1 victory against Guinea Bissau. Mauritania finished third in Group A with four points, while Guinea Bissau exited the tournament without a point.

With the semi-finals on the horizon, the Female Lone Star will look to continue their impressive run and aim for a place in the final, reaffirming their growth as a competitive force in women’s football within the West African region.
