Africa-Press – Liberia. The newly elected President of the Inter-School Sports Association (ISSA), Evan B. Somah, has pledged to restore the passion and competitiveness that once defined inter-school sports in Liberia.
Somah, who succeeded Garyonleweh Gar Zepu, said his administration’s goal is to rejuvenate the spirit of ISSA and promote the development of young athletes through football, kickball, and basketball across all 15 counties.
“My administration’s aim is to rejuvenate the game spirit of ISSA for the common growth of our member schools and players,” Somah said. “We must work together with our schools to rebuild our league and restore pride to ISSA.”
Somah said his victory came as no surprise because of his long-standing involvement and contributions to ISSA over the past two decades. He called on fellow officials to put aside personal differences and unite behind a shared goal of advancing school sports.
“Those who elected me know the level of work I’ve contributed to ISSA for the last 15 to 20 years,” he said. “Let us unite and work together to keep the spirit of ISSA alive.”
Upcoming League Season
The ISSA President announced that the 2025/2026 league season will begin in the second week of November 2025, with school registration taking place during the first week of November.
He revealed that several schools, including those that did not participate in the 2024/2025 league, have expressed interest in joining the new season.
Promoting Education and Discipline
Somah praised sports directors, players, and students for their participation in the last league season but urged them to remain disciplined and committed to their education.
“We want our players to excel not only on the field but also in the classroom,” he said. “Sports directors must ensure their students maintain strong academic performance and respect league regulations.”
He reaffirmed that his administration will continue supporting schools and young athletes in building their skills through sports, emphasizing that ISSA remains a key platform for discovering and nurturing Liberia’s future football, basketball, and kickball stars.
“This administration will continue to stand with our schools, athletes, and sports directors,” Somah concluded. “Together, we will revive and sustain the true spirit of inter-school sports in Liberia.”
