Africa-Press – Liberia. Bomi County Senator Edwin Snowe has cautioned his colleagues against using government-funded legislative projects for self-promotion, warning that such actions undermine the intended purpose of national development initiatives.
Senator Snowe emphasized that the Government of Liberia, through the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE), allocates funding to every lawmaker to undertake projects in their respective districts and counties. Despite this, he noted that some lawmakers—whom he did not name—have been using these projects to score political points.
He made the remarks on November 29 during the dedication of a refurbished basketball and volleyball court at the C.H. Dewey High School in Tubmanburg, Bomi County.
Snowe acknowledged that funding for the refurbishment came from the national government and was implemented by LACE.
“The government has given me money two times for legislative projects under LACE and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. I want to thank His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and the Executive Director of LACE for revamping its activities. They gave every legislator money to do projects. Here is my own project—it is not in the sky. We should never use legislative projects for our own political glorification,” he said.
The Senator also highlighted several of his personal initiatives, including scholarships for more than 100 students at the Bomi County Community College, three international scholarships to India, vacation job opportunities for 375 students, a town hall project in Gbah, and financial support to schools and clinics in the county.
He noted that LACE has been implementing development projects in communities across all counties since 2004 and commended local residents for their role in executing the court refurbishment project.
Snowe further clarified that the project was carried out entirely by a Liberian contractor and stressed the importance of using Liberian firms for government-funded projects to boost the local economy.
He criticized the trend of awarding contracts to foreign companies at the expense of competent Liberian professionals.
“All of our workforce came from right here in Tubmanburg, Bomi County. We utilized our own people. We did not go to any other country to bring people to do this project. Mr. Executive Director, I want to encourage you—if the government gives us money for projects, let’s emphasize that these projects must be done by Liberians. We have trained Liberian engineers and technicians in this country,” he added.
Local authorities and citizens in Bomi praised Senator Snowe for ensuring the successful completion of the project and pledged to continue working with him to advance the socio-economic and infrastructural development of the county and the nation.
