Prominent women’s rights advocate and journalist Veronica Songor-Johnson, has officially declared her intention to contest for the position of Vice Co-Chair of the National Civil Society Council of Liberia (NCSCL) in the upcoming 2025 leadership elections.
In a statement issued in Monrovia, Madam Songor-Johnson expressed her “immense humility and deep sense of responsibility” as she steps forward to seek the confidence of her colleagues across Liberia’s civil society landscape.
Having served as a Member-at-Large on the NCSCL since 2022, Songor-Johnson said her decision to run stems from her desire to strengthen the Council’s influence and continue advancing the voices of civil society organizations in national governance and development.
Known for her strong advocacy in women’s human rights, media freedom, and grassroots empowerment, Songor-Johnson brings with her a wealth of experience as a freelance journalist, diplomat, mentor, and advocate.
She said her candidacy is inspired by the encouragement of colleagues and partners who believe in her proven commitment and leadership track record.
“Throughout my three-year tenure, I have sought to stand tall as a steadfast advocate for civil society, embodying the principles of leadership, integrity, and service. As a women’s human rights defender, freelance journalist, diplomat, mentor, and advocate, I understand the importance of unity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to our shared cause. As I seek to serve as Vice Co-Chair, I pledge to uphold these values and to work diligently in supporting the Council’s objectives,” she stated.
While emphasizing that her campaign is not about personal gain, she pledged to continue standing for collective rights, inclusion, and justice within Liberia’s civic space.
“I do not promise financial benefits, but I pledge my fullest support—standing tall for our collective rights, interests, and representation,” she noted, quoting Mahatma Gandhi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
The aspiring Vice Co-Chair called on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), particularly women-led groups, as well as the general public and well-wishers, to support her bid in the upcoming elections.
“Together, let us forge a stronger, more united civil society that truly reflects the aspirations of our people,” she appealed. “I am committed to delivering impactful leadership rooted in transparency, accountability, and unwavering dedication.”
Madam Songor-Johnson’s declaration adds to the growing anticipation ahead of the NCSCL’s 2025 elections, which are expected to usher in a new leadership team tasked with strengthening the role of civil society in promoting governance, transparency, and social justice across Liberia.
