Weah Critiques CAF's Stripping of Senegal's AFCON Title

Africa-Press – Liberia. Former Liberian President and global football icon George Manneh Weah has launched a scathing critique against the Confederation of African Football (CAF), following its controversial decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco.

In a strongly worded statement released Thursday y, March 19, the former World Player of the Year described the move as “unjustified” and a severe blow to the integrity of the African game.

Weah warned that by overturning a result determined on the pitch, CAF is undermining the very laws that govern global football.

The ‘Law 5’ Controversy

Central to Weah’s argument is Law 5 of the Laws of the Game, which grants referees the ultimate authority over all match-related decisions.

The football legend emphasized that once a match is completed under the supervision of the appointed official, administrative bodies should not have the power to retroactively alter the outcome.

“In football, the Laws of the Game are clear: the referee on the pitch is the final authority,” Weah noted, stressing that CAF’s own regulations are intended to align with FIFA statutes that protect the sanctity of match officials’ decisions.

The dispute stems from the chaotic AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco.

The match saw a dramatic walk-off by Senegalese players, yet the referee did not abandon the fixture.

Instead, he allowed play to resume, and the game proceeded through extra time until a final whistle was blown.

Stoppage vs. Forfeiture

According to Weah, the referee’s official post-match report did not classify the incident as a “forfeiture,” which would have automatically handed victory to the opposing side. Instead, it was recorded as a “temporary stoppage,” with the official recommending disciplinary fines for misconduct rather than the nullification of the result.

“For this reason, the subsequent decision by the CAF committee, taken after the match had already been concluded, should not override the authority exercised by the referee,” the statement read.

A ‘Dangerous Precedent’

The former AC Milan striker warned that CAF’s intervention sets a “slippery slope” for the sport.

He argued that if committees can overturn completed matches based on administrative whims, it opens the door for endless post-match disputes over routine calls like penalties, offsides, and red cards.

“Football must be decided on the pitch, not re-decided after the final whistle,” Weah asserted.

He further lamented that the ruling has “scarred and blemished African football,” eroding the continent’s trust in the fairness and consistency of its premier competitions.

Call for Legal Intervention

Weah is now calling on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and other international governing bodies to intervene urgently.

He described the current situation as a crisis that could set a troubling standard for all future African competitions if left uncorrected.

Amid the firestorm, the former Liberian president also took time to address “fake news” circulating on social media.

He categorically denied viral reports suggesting he supported CAF’s ruling, labeling them as false and misleading.

He urged the public to stop the unauthorized use of his name and image to promote fabricated narratives.

As the debate intensifies across the continent, many analysts believe this dispute is headed for a high-stakes legal showdown that could redefine how match outcomes and governance are handled in African football for years to come.
