Kumkuyu Criticizes Homeland Security for Silence on Crimes

Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Chief Whip Moses Kumkuyu has criticized the Ministry of Homeland Security for failing to update the public on major security incidents, raising concerns about transparency and public confidence.

Kumkuyu highlighted a series of violent crimes that he says signal a broader breakdown in national security. These include murders, abductions, and attacks on vulnerable groups, including albino individuals and community leaders.

He specifically cited the high-profile murder of Victoria Bobe, noting that while suspects were publicly identified, the ministry has not provided clear updates on whether they have been prosecuted or remain under investigation.

The MCP official also referred to the February 6 abduction of the owner of Crossroads Hotel. Authorities later confirmed the victim returned home safely on March 11, but Kumkuyu criticized the ministry for failing to communicate this positive outcome to the public.

He said, “We expected at least a brief statement to reassure the nation and restore confidence. Timely communication is essential to maintaining public trust in law enforcement and government institutions.”

Kumkuyu further called on the ministry to provide adequate resources to address security challenges and to act decisively in investigating and prosecuting high-profile cases, warning that continued silence risks eroding citizens’ confidence in the state’s ability to protect them.

He concluded by urging stronger government accountability and more transparent communication, stressing that the public deserves to be informed about the resolution of critical security incidents to feel safe and confident in the country.
