Africa-Press – Malawi. Malawi government officials are a big embarrassment following the different statements that have been given during Martha Chizuma’s arrest. They have spoken in different tongues showing how ignorant government is when police decided to break into the ACB director general’s house and arrested her due to an alleged leaked audio in which she was discussing the high profile corruption case involving number 1 and number 2.
“I hope you know what l mean,” Chizuma said in the audio as she spoke with an unknown man.
President Chakwera doesn’t know about the arrest of Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB ) Director General Martha Chizuma but this has raised many doubts and questions whether what we have heard is true or false that Chakwera didn’t know anything.
The President is the commander in chief of armed forces including Malawi police service. What does it mean when a commander doesn’t know that his officers are out on a mission?
Imagine if President Barack Obama of the United States of America expressed his ignorance that the American Army had gone on a mission to capture Osama Bin Laden from his hiding place?
It wouldn’t have added up to anything sensible if his spokesperson said Obama didn’t know because the American Army works independently. That would be very cheap propaganda.
Who is in control? This is the question which must seriously be scrutinized looking at the events following the arrest of ACB director general Chizuma.
Political pundits, lawyers, civil society, rights groups, the church and opposition have all spoken with one voice against government that what they are saying and how they are responding suggests two things: either government is saying the truth or they are telling lies.
Who is in charge of police? The commander in chief is the overall in charge of police and that commander in chief is nobody other than the State President. Whisking of suspects to far away police stations baffles me quite a lot.
I do not see the logic of doing this by our reformed Malawi Police Service. On the other hand, I fail to see the legal elements of whisking Martha Chizuma some 48 kilometers away from the capital city by our reformed Malawi Police Service.
I can imagine how scary it was for the director general to be driven that distance in the wee hours of that Tuesday 6 December 2022. Civil matters handling do not require arrests and detentions in the manner the Martha Chizuma’s case was handled.
There was a lot of malice, going too far and beyond limits by Malawi Police. From another angle, this civil case was used to stop very important cases from being pursued further and of course to try and fight back and inflict fear in the ACB boss including her team.
In other words, government arrested the Anti Corruption Bureau for dealing with high profile corruption Ignorant government hierarchy is another drama series that has been plotted and showcased shifting from the Agricultural Inputs Program.
Its another Zee world series channel in Malawi. Entertainment never stops in this small nation. Broken government system has openly displayed to those who can clearly see the blunders, and low profile explanations by different government top officials.
The challenge we have is that the people Malawians entrusted to tell the nation the truth are busy trying to back and defend government mistakes so they look like everything is moving in the right direction.
Frustrating corruption fight is an element which is clearly among the current government leadership but they forget one thing. Malawians voted for Tonse because they believed this government would fight corruption head on and probably end corruption completely as the Chakwera Hi-5 says.
However, the people of this country are not satisfied with the fight against government corruption because there is a lot of interference by government.
Chakwera is a man of double standards for criticizing and supporting the ACB at the sane time. He is a hypocrite and that is one reason the President is losing trust and respect.
The President must take one side and be consistent to win back the people’s trust. Government support to fight corruption is not in full as Malawians see it. Citizens suspect government is playing double standards.
In conclusion, it appears human rights were violated during the arrest of ACB director general Martha Chizuma and the Malawi human rights commission must launch investigations into what exactly transpired. Women Lawyers Association should also come in and help in the matter then submit their findings to the public.
Malawians must not be kept waiting for government commission of enquiry alone which never comes out for years on end. This could be part of a parallel investigation into this matter otherwise Malawians cannot trust their own government anymore.
