Construction regulator pushes for compliance

Africa-Press – Malawi. The Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (Cira) has urged players in the construction sector to comply with its regulations in order to ensure the delivery of quality services.

The call was made during a sensitisation meeting in Mzuzu City Monday, when it was aimed at briefing stakeholders on oversight functions of the authority following its transition from a council to a fully-fledged regulatory authority.

The transition from National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) to Cira follows amendments to the Construction Industry Act, which came into effect in June last year.

The reforms seek to align Malawi’s construction sector with international best practices, enhance transparency and support the government’s infrastructure development agenda.

Cira Chief Executive Officer, engineer Gerald Khonje, advised contractors to comply with all mandates and functions of the authority.

“Compliance is very crucial because, for us to have quality infrastructure, all parties involved in a project, including those designing, planning, budgeting, procuring and operating it, must adhere to quality standards to ensure that whatever we do is predictably of high standard,” he said.

Commenting on the issues, Sitbec Limited Managing Director William Mbobe expressed hope that the new framework would improve compliance levels and promote fair competition within the industry.
