DPP launches manifesto

Africa-Press – Malawi. Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Peter Mutharika Sunday did not get off his open vehicle when he launched the party’s campaign period at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre City.

DPP and its alliance partner Alliance for Democracy (Aford) launched the campaign period to a jampacked Njamba Park.

DPP secretary general Peter Mukhito said Mutharika did not speak from the podium due to security threats.

“Some gangs wanted to attack our president and that is why he did not get out of the car,” he said.

Speaking to multitudes of people on a chilly afternoon in the commercial city, Mutharika said they would fulfill promises made in their manifesto, which was launched Sunday morning.

“We will deliver on our promises. We have done this before and we will do it again. In 2014, we promised forex and we delivered. Every constituency should have a technical college and we will do it,” he said.

Mutharika further said, if elected to power, his administration would continue the distribution of malata [iron sheets] and cement as part of its subsidy programmes.

“When we left the government in [June 23] 2020, we had constructed 15,000 houses and we will continue doing that. Our programme will focus on rebuilding the country. In the next five years, the country will reclaim its glory,” he said.

Mutharika further urged people who have registered to vote in the forthcoming polls, arguing that it is the only way to oust the current administration out of power.

On the issue of the economy, the former Malawi leader said he would institute an economic recovery committee aimed at reviving the economy.

PRESENT—Alliance for Democracy president Enoch Chihana (left), whose party has joined forces with DPP, and DPP senior member George ChapondaMutharika also told the gathering that he would issue a directive to bring back to Blantyre City government offices that were transferred to Lilongwe City, saying Blantyre “is dead”.

Aford president Enoch Chihana said the partnership was the only sure way of getting into power.

Chihana urged Mutharika to relax, saying they would campaign for him.

“We will do the campaign and, as such, be at ease in Mangochi and enjoy fish,” he said.

Mutharika’s running mate Jane Ansah thanked the former president for considering her.

“I assure you that I am ready to support you in fulfilling the campaign promises. The country has stagnated for the past five years and it is time to reclaim that glory. Our manifesto is speaking to all people in the country and be assured that we will address your issues because you have a leader who is capable of delivering the goods,” he said.

Mutharika was accompanied by party supporters from Kamuzu Upper Stadium to the venue of the event.

He also received a copy of the party’s manifesto from Ansah, who presided over its launch at Mount Soche Hotel after Mutharika delegated her.
