Africa-Press – Malawi. Government has disclosed that it has made progress on public infrastructure standard guidelines formulation. Once finalised, public bodies will be expected to adhere to set standards when implementing projects.
National Local Government Finance Committee (NLGFC) Chairperson Richard Chapweteka said this when he courted councillors and officials from district councils in the Northern Region.
“The expectation is that the guidelines will be in use from the 2023- 24 financial year. Once they come into force, the committee [NLGFC] will only be approving funds for projects that have government designs.
“We want to go back to the good, old days when schools, hospitals and government offices had one design. If you go to the Southern Region, you will find that government structures are no different from those in the Northern and Central regions,” he said.
Local Government, Culture and National Unity Deputy Minister Owen Chomanika said, for the country to benefit from public infrastructure and other initiatives, there is a need for collaboration between members of Parliament (MPs) and councillors.
“This will facilitate smooth implementation of projects at district council level.
“That is why we want to engage MPs because they work with councillors. We want vibrant councils that would use CDF [Constituency Development Fund], DDF [District Development Fund] and other allocations to promote meaningful development,” he said.
