Africa-Press – Malawi. Former Blue Eagles coach Gerald Phiri senior has won a trophy in eSwatini, a typical case of a rejected stone becoming a cornerstone. Phiri senior steered Ngizinisa Hotspur to the MoMo Cup glory on Sunday after beating Moneni Pirates 2-1 in extra-time.
His side won the MTN sponsored cup despite finishing the final game with 10 men at Somholo National Stadium. According to www.africa-press.net, Phiri dedicated the inaugural MoMo Cup trophy to the team’s supporters.
“I’m so happy with the win. I dedicate the trophy to the supporters after they voted the team to the MoMo Cup. I would like to thank the players and president of the club for their support,” he told the publication.
The former Flames assistant coach also told the publication that it was not easy to defeat Pirates since they were one-man down for prolonged stages of the match.
Phiri, who locally had stints with Nyasa Big Bullets, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Mighty Wakawaka Tigers, was yet to respond to our questionnaire sent through WhatsApp.
Meanwhile, National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) Chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni applauded Phiri for inspiring his side to cup success. “This should challenge other local coaches to aim high. We need coaches that are qualified and result oriented,” he said. Phiri was sacked by Eagles at the end of last season after the side survived relegation on the final day.
