Arts Minister participates in UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2022

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr. Avinash Teeluck, participated in the 2022 UNESCO MONDIACULT, the largest global conference devoted to culture for the past 40 years.

The conference held from 28 to 30 September 2022 brought together 135 ministers of culture of different Member States over the three days in Mexico City.

The main goal of the conference was to shape a more robust and resilient cultural sector, fully anchored in the perspectives of sustainable development as well as promotion of solidarity, peace, and security, in line with the vision enshrined in the UN Secretary-General’s report ‘Our Common Agenda’ (September 2021), which refers to culture as a ‘global public good, the good of us all.
During his address for the thematic sessions – Renewed and strengthened cultural policies, Minister Teeluck made an appeal that Article 16 of the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, that is, Preferential Treatment for Developing Countries, be made more active in its implementation especially for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) given the specificities.

He highlighted that SIDS have their own constraints and limitations and it is important therefore that a special consideration be given by the UNESCO to SIDS in terms of Article 16.

He further requested the UNESCO to consider the setting up of a special forum for monitoring of Article 16 in the spirit of Fair Culture. MONDIACULT was convened by UNESCO 40 years after the first Mondiacult World Conference on Cultural Policies, held in Mexico City (Mexico) in 1982.
