Africa-Press – Mauritius. “Accountability and Justice for Democratic Resilience in Africa” was the theme of this year’s African Union Conversations Series, which aimed to assess the effectiveness of the continent’s accountability and justice mechanisms. The event, which took place on Friday, assessed and proposed the ratification and implementation of key African Union instruments, with emphasis on the Protocol on Amendments to the Statute of the African Court of Justice and Human Rights (Malabo Protocol) and the Organization’s Transitional Justice Policy, which aim to combat crimes such as genocide, corruption and unconstitutional changes of government.

The African Union’s theme for 2025, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations”, under the auspices of Angola’s Presidency of the African Union, highlights the need for reparations for historical injustices and the importance of robust continental accountability systems.

The document released on the African Union website supports, among its objectives, the recommendation of measures to strengthen the ratification and implementation of the AU’s main legal instruments on accountability and justice in Africa. It is also recommended that a platform be provided for multi-stakeholder dialogue and advocacy on transitional justice and accountability.

This edition of “Africa in Conversations” is expected to generate concrete advocacy strategies to ratify and implement AU accountability and justice instruments, and raise awareness of transitional justice and accountability frameworks.

Senior officials from the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) of AU Member States, diplomatic corps, UN agencies, civil society organizations and academics participated in the dialogue. The “African Union Conversations Series” are annual meetings held by the continental organization to discuss issues of relevance to Africa, such as refugees, internally displaced people and solutions to forced displacement.
