Africa-Press – Mauritius. Three families residing at Singamanie, Bois Marchand and occupying land without formal tenure were handed over leases formalising their right of occupation. The ceremony was presided by the Minister of Housing and Lands, Mr Shakeel Mohamed in presence of Member of the National Assembly, Mrs Anabelle Savabaddy on 24 December.
In a statement Minister Mohamed recalled that several inspections were carried out in the region earlier to take note of the grievance of the families and come up with a concrete solution. He deplored that these families resided in the area for more than 20 years without legal documentation, leaving them vulnerable to eviction at any time.
Government, he emphasised, has compassion for the population especially those in distress. This initiative, stated the Minister, is part of a broader regularisation process and confirmed that more cases of families in similar situations will be formalised in the coming months.
For her part, Mrs Savabaddy highlighted that this action reflects the Government’s commitment to social justice and improved living conditions for the citizens.
