Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Tripartite Technical Meeting on salary compensation for the year 2026 was held, this afternoon, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations, Mr Reza Uteem in Port-Louis.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders including officers of the parent Ministry and Statistics Mauritius as well as representatives of Business Mauritius and Trade Unions to exchange views on economic indicators for the upcoming 2026 salary compensation exercise.
Minister Uteem highlighted that as per Statistics Mauritius, the inflation rate forecast for year 2025 stands at 3.7%, including figures for October and projections for November and December.
He indicated that representatives of the private sector have outlined challenges currently facing enterprises, noting that some of them may not absorb an increase in salary costs and risk closure. Concerns were also raised that any increase in salary compensation could likely impact consumers through higher prices.
Stakeholders requested that Government provide additional support to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and export-oriented sectors. Minister Uteem recalled that, as announced in the 2025/2026 Budget, Government is already providing support measures to SMEs and export-oriented enterprises.
As for Trade Union representatives, they stressed the need to ensure adequate compensation for employees in view of the rising cost of living, highlighted the Minister while adding that they contested the estimates of Statistics Mauritius. According to the Minister, their considerations are based on the price increase of certain products, which differ from the standard basket used by Statistics Mauritius.
Mr Uteem also mentioned that several Trade Unions have made proposals regarding the quantum of salary compensation and requested that compensation be granted across the board and not limited to employees earning below Rs 50,000.
All concerned stakeholders are invited to submit their final recommendations by Monday 01 Decemeber 2025. Once all submissions are received, the parent Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, will analyse the data and convene another Tripartite Meeting to announce the compensation quantum.
