Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Labour Party-Mauritius Militant Movement-New Democrats alliance faced the press yesterday. The main topic on the agenda was the appointment of Adrien Duval as speaker after the resignation of Sooroojdev Phokeer for “health reasons” .
Navin Ramgoolam highlighted the departure of Sooroojdev Phokeer and the filthy campaign that the latter had led against him in the constituency of Montagne-Blanche/Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est (No. 10) during the last legislative elections. For this role, Sooroojdev Phokeer was rewarded by the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) which subsequently appointed him speaker. But now, he maintained, the orange party is no longer interested in him but is focusing on the importance of its alliance with the Mauritian Social Democratic Party (PMSD).
Appointing Adrien Duval, son of Xavier-Luc, as speaker proves, according to Navin Ramgoolam, that he was right to say, since last April, that the leader of the PMSD was negotiating with the MSM. He added that he had all the details of the meetings between the two parties and the people concerned. For the leader of the reds, the appointment of Adrien Duval is a pretext to announce “the engagement of the PMSD with the government” . He pointed out that it is “a papa-piti team welcoming another papa-piti team.”
He also wondered how Xavier-Luc Duval would explain his past criticisms of this same government in the future and why he continues to sit on the opposition benches in Parliament. For him, Xavier-Luc Duval has made his choice and has indeed made the alliance a reality. Thursday being, he said, “the engagement and soon the haldi”, the wedding.
He also addressed the fate of Zahid Nazurally and the “rape” of Article 50 of the Constitution and the by-election at No. 10 where according to him, the State will spend Rs 17 million for an elected official who is not sure of entering Parliament. Richard Duval recalled why he and his colleagues from the New Democrats had, last April, resigned from the PMSD. A decision that is clearly reflected in what happened in Parliament on Thursday.
Paul Bérenger also targeted former speaker Sooroojdev Phokeer, stressing that he had “a well-deserved kick in the ass” . He finds it unacceptable that the three suspended MPs still cannot sit in Parliament and said he does not want Xavier-Luc Duval to sit behind his back because otherwise, he will have to make sure that the latter does not have a knife (an allusion to the term being stabbed in the back). The MMM leader stressed that the sitting arrangement in the hemicycle will have to be reviewed. He then returned to Adrien Duval’s accident in Ebène in September 2022.
