Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness, proceeded yesterday with the inauguration of a left-turning lane and a slip lane as part of the ‘Reconfiguration of Père Laval Avenue’ project at the junction of St Paul Road (B4) onto Père Laval/Nalletamby Road (B69).
Junior Minister, Mr Fawzi Allymun; the Chairman of the Road Development Authority, Mr Vinay Koonjul; as well as other eminent personalities were also present.
In a statement Minister Gunness pointed out that works started on 17 March 2025 and were recently completed. He recalled that following the implementation of Metro Express Phase 2 project, the existing two-lane carriageway along Swami Sivananda Road (B63) from the petrol station located at Floreal up to CEB Vacoas was reduced to a single lane to accommodate the Light Rail Vehicle track. This reduction in lane capacity further aggravated traffic conditions in the regions of Curepipe, Floreal and Vacoas.
As such the new road configuration will alleviate traffic congestion and divert traffic away from Swami Sivananda Road. Mr Gunness also indicated that the possibility of setting up a slip lane from Père Laval/Nalletamby Road to St Paul Road is currently being explored by relevant authorities.
The works, to the tune of some Rs 10.2 million, consisted of the following: clearing of site; demolition of existing drain and footpath; undergrounding and Relocation of CEB High Tension cable; construction of a new lane of approximately 200 metres long and 3.5 metres wide; provision of new footpath and drain; provision of miscellaneous road equipment such as carriageway markings, traffic signs, new traffic lights and safety fences; as well as landscaping works.
