Africa-Press – Mozambique. The average level of prices in Mozambique’s urban areas rose by 0.68 per cent in February, according to the latest figures published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

This brought the annual rate of inflation to 3.2 per cent, slightly down on the 3.04 per cent recorded in January.

The accumulated inflation for the first two months of the year was 1.94 per cent, accounted for mainly by rising food prices.

Among the goods with the most significant price rises in February were charcoal (up by 9.4 per cent), lettuce (17.8 per cent), cabbage (eight per cent), tomatoes (5.5 per cent), vegetable oil (1.9 per cent), and cement (1.2 per cent).

In some cases, prices declined over the month, notably for carrots (down by 15 per cent), coconuts (12.4 per cent), potatoes (7.9 per cent), and eggs (3.2 per cent).

The sharpest inflation over the month was in Xai-Xai (3.12 per cent), followed by Chimoio (1.27 per cent). The cities with the lowest monthly inflation rates were Quelimane (0.23 per cent), Tete (0.31 per cent), and Maputo (0.44 per cent).
