Africa-Press – Mozambique. Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi, has once again demonstrated India’s technological strength and industrial excellence in locomotive manufacturing on the global stage.

The tenth and final unit of BLW’s 3,300‐horsepower AC‐AC diesel‐electric locomotive was successfully dispatched to Mozambique on Saturday, marking the completion of an export order for 10 such locomotives.

This milestone highlights BLW’s growing global competitiveness and reinforces the international reputation of Indian Railways as a reliable manufacturing and export partner. The locomotives were produced in phases within the stipulated timeframe under an export contract executed through RITES Limited.

Designed and manufactured at BLW, these state‐of‐the‐art 3,300 HP Cape Gauge (1,067 mm) locomotives are capable of operating at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

Built to meet international standards, they feature advanced AC‐AC traction technology, a modern and ergonomic cab design, and enhanced driver‐comfort amenities such as a refrigerator, hot plate and mobile holder. These features ensure improved operational efficiency, reliability and crew comfort, reflecting the high standards of Indian engineering.

Banaras Locomotive Works is emerging as a major global export hub for locomotive manufacturing. With its indigenous design, advanced manufacturing capabilities and expertise in modern rail technology, BLW is strengthening India’s presence in the global railway market.

To date, BLW has exported 182 locomotives to 11 countries, including Tanzania, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Sudan, Angola, Myanmar, Senegal, Mali and Mozambique. These exports have significantly contributed to the development and modernisation of the respective countries’ rail systems.

In line with the vision of “Make in India” and “Make for the World,” this achievement underscores Indian Railways’ ability to design, manufacture and supply rolling stock for various gauge systems tailored to the needs of different countries.

Through these efforts, India is not only supporting partner countries in upgrading their rail infrastructure but is also further strengthening its position as a reliable global exporter of railway rolling stock and related services. This achievement clearly reflects India’s growing technological self‐reliance, industrial capabilities and its ever‐expanding influence in the global railway equipment market.
