Africa-Press – Mozambique. The number of fatal victims of terrorist attacks last week, in Mocímboa da Praia town, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, has risen to seven, after local residents discovered three more corpses.

According to sources cited in Wednesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the attack. which took place on 7 September, in the town’s Filipe Nyusi neighbourhood, also caused the death of two members of the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) and a civilian.

After Sunday’s attack, life in Mocímboa da Praia has returned to normal, but some households remain refugees in the village of Mueda, 100 kilometres from the area that suffered the terrorist incursion.

Mocímboa da Praia was the scene of the first attack by the Jihadists in October 2017. There were further attacks against the town in March, June and August 2020. In the last of those attacks the Islamists remained in control of the town for a year, before they were expelled by Rwandan forces in August 2021.

Since then, the town has been relatively secure, guarded by Mozambican and Rwandan troops. This relative calm was shattered by the Sunday night attack.

Last week, residents reported insurgent movements in an area between Oasse locality and Mocímboa da Praia town, as well as recent attacks against villages in Palma district, which borders Mocímboa da Praia.
