Africa-Press – Mozambique. The British High Commission in Maputo held a farewell ceremony for eight Mozambican students selected for the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, which will allow them to attend Master’s courses in the UK during the 2025/2026 academic season.

The fellows will study in strategic areas such as Urban Planning, Social and Development Studies, Bioscience and Natural Resources Law, among others, reinforcing essential skills for the sustainable development of Mozambique. The event was attended by the National Director for High Education, Dr Pedro Comissal in representation of the Minister of Education and Culture, Samaria Tovela, representatives of the Mozambique Scholarship Institute (IBE) and program partners.

On the sidelines of the farewell ceremony, British High Commissioner Helen Lewis said: “These scholars represent the best of Mozambican youth and were chosen for their leadership potential and commitment to contributing to the country’s development. Chevening is not just an academic opportunity, it is a platform to create leaders who will drive positive change and strengthen relations between our countries.”

The Representative of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Government of Mozambique, Dr. Pedro Comissal, said:”The trip of this group of students to the United Kingdom represents an important milestone in the partnership of our two countries. We hope that these students will be able to acquire as much knowledge and experience as possible through their studies and that they will return to Mozambique ready to contribute to the development of the country.”

Chevening is the British Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and partners. It is aimed at individuals with high leadership potential and commitment to development. The scholarship fully covers the costs of a Master’s degree in the UK, providing access to universities of excellence and unique networking opportunities.

The representative of the Chevening Alumni Association said: “Being part of the Chevening community is a transformative experience. These new fellows will have access to excellent knowledge and a global network that will help them contribute to the development of Mozambique.”

About 400 Mozambicans have benefited from this scholarship since its inception. Currently, 12 Mozambican students are in the United Kingdom, with a return scheduled for 2025.

Chevening is a centrepiece of British diplomacy, as it promotes shared values, leadership and global networks that drive sustainable development. By investing in education and capacity building, the UK strengthens its partnership with Mozambique, aligning with strategic priorities such as good governance, inclusive economic growth and climate resilience.
