Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Sunday guaranteed that his government is strengthening the capacity of the defence and security forces to fight against terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
Speaking at the heads of state summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), in the Malagasy capital, Antananarivo, Chapo said “eradicating the threat posed by terrorism in Cabo Delgado is one of the priorities of the Mozambican government. To this end, the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) are continuing to boost their actions to staunch this phenomenon”.
“We are committed to strengthening the capacity of our troops for a more effective approach to terrorism in the framework of defending our sovereignty and territorial integrity”, Chapo added.
He took the opportunity to thank those SADC members who had provided troops to SAMIM (SADC Military Mission in Mozambique). Citizens from several SADC countries had lost their lives in this mission, he said, “and Mozambique will continue to pay tribute to these exemplary sons who sacrificed their lives in the name of solidarity and the spirit of brotherhood”.
Chapo claimed that Mozambique has overcome the unrest that followed the declaration of general election results last December which were widely regarded as fraudulent.
The country’s political parties had signed a commitment “for an inclusive political dialogue”, he stressed, and “Mozambique is politically and socially stable, thanks to an understanding between brothers”.
At the summit, the rotating presidency of SADC, held for the past year by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, passed to the hands of Madagascan leader Andre Rajoelina.
Rajoelina promised to strengthen “the political and economic cohesion of SADC, so that SADC will speak with just one voice, because our strength lies in our union”.
“We will always prioritise dialogue to solve conflicts”, he said. “We will also speed up regional energy and industrial projects and make agricultural transformation a priority”.
