Daniel Chapo Urges Unity Among Liberation Parties

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and Mozambican head of state called in Johannesburg this Sunday for the unity of the “liberation parties” of southern Africa against the far-right that wants to bring “puppet governments” to power.

“Let us unite more as a single bloc to face the threat looming over our liberation parties,” said Daniel Chapo, president of Frelimo, in power since 1975, while speaking at the 2025 Liberation Movements Summit, hosted by the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa.

“We are increasingly witnessing the intensification of support for chauvinistic far-right groups that use social media, artificial intelligence, and other platforms to spread disinformation through populist hate speech and discredit the achievements of our governments and the conquests of our people,” Chapo warned at the meeting of leaders and cadres of the historic liberation parties of southern Africa, including the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA, in power since 1975).

For the Mozambican leader, “it is increasingly clear” that the “main objective” of far-right movements “is to use elections to force the much-vaunted ‘regime change’, even against the will of the people”.

“Their tactic consists of trying to separate the people from our parties, to weaken our parties and put puppet governments in power and continually impoverish our people,” he warned.

Daniel Chapo has previously expressed concern about alleged far-right intervention on the continent, linking it to the post-election protests in Mozambique, which, following the October 9 general elections, over five months caused nearly 400 deaths in the country, as well as looting and the destruction of public property and businesses.

“It is true that there are several circumstantial factors that affect the performance of our parties. However, regardless of the factors that can be cited to characterize the current situation, we understand that the greatest challenges lie within our own parties. What we would call an internal issue,” he noted.

Therefore, he said, “it is urgent” that the “liberation parties define strategies” and actions “aimed at reversing the advance of the opposition parties and, above all, the far right”.

“But to achieve this, we need to strengthen cohesion and internal unity within our parties and among our parties in the region. We may have differences, we may have different and divergent points of view, but we must never reach the level of antagonistic contradictions. In other words, we must be able to resolve our differences within the framework of our parties and within our party bodies,” acknowledged the Mozambican leader.

The Johannesburg summit, also attended by former President of the Republic of Mozambique and Honorary President of Frelimo, Joaquim Chissano, aimed at strengthening cooperation between these political forces, which originated in the national liberation struggles, as well as concertation around the common challenges of development, peace, and sovereignty of the African peoples.

The 2025 Liberation Movements Summit was held at the Radison Blu Hotel, Kempton Park, Johannesburg (South Africa) from the 25th to 28th of July 2025 under the theme: “Defending the Liberation Gains, Advancing Integrated Socio-Economic Development, Strengthening Solidarity for a Better Africa.”
