Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party on Thursday announced the establishment of a Central Office to prepare for the presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections scheduled for 9 October.
Speaking at a Maputo press conference after a meeting of the Party’s Political Commission, Frelimo spokesperson Ludmila Maguni said the Frelimo General Secretary, Roque Silva, will head the election office
But she declined to reveal who else will be a member of the new body. “The structure has been approved, and in due course we shall announce its composition”, said Maguni.
She said that the previous election office, which ran the Frelimo campaign for last year’s municipal elections, has been dissolved.
Maguni would not reveal the names of any potential Frelimo presidential candidates. The Mozambican constitution bars the current president, Filipe Nyusi, from standing for a third term of office, and to date not a single figure from Frelimo has announced his or her intention of standing.
Under the Frelimo statutes, it is the Party’s Central Committee that must decide on its presidential candidate. A meeting of the Central Committee is expected for late February or early March – but Maguni declined to give a definite date. She merely said that a date for the meeting would be announced “soon”.
Maguni said the Political Commission had condemned the recent kidnappings and attempted kidnappings in Maputo and Beira and called on the police to step up its actions “to prevent this type of crime which has a negative impact on the economy and on society”.
She praised the courage of the forces fighting against islamist terrorists in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, and urged “all citizens to be vigilant and to collaborate in denouncing the movements of potential terrorists and their collaborators”.
