Mozambique: Authorities seize 2,000 cubic metres of illegal timber for export

Africa-PressMozambique. Mozambique’s National Agency for Environmental Quality Control (Aqua) has seized over 2,000 cubic metres of wood that was being illegally exported through the port of Beira, in central Mozambique, the state agency said.

Morgado Mussengue, Aqua’s delegate in Sofala province, told Radio Mozambique that the wood was in possession of two companies that had falsified data about the product.

The companies intended to export the goods to Asia via the port of Beira.

Mussengue said that the authorities had imposed fines of two million meticais (€27,144).

Timber seizures for attempted illegal exports are common in Mozambique, and the goods are usually destined for China.
