Mozambique: Boyfriend confesses to murder of environmentalist – AIM report

Africa-PressMozambique. The Mozambican Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) announced on Monday that a boyfriend has confessed to the murder, last Friday night, of prominent environmental activist Lara Muaves.

Cited by the independent newsheet “Carta de Mocambique”, the Maputo Sernic spokesperson, Hilario Lole, told reporters on Monday that Lara’s lifeless body had been found in a drainage channel near her house in the neighbourhood of Costa do Sol. There was a knife protruding from her stomach.

Lara lives in Costa do Sol, but she was in a relationship with a young man from Marracuene district. The police went looking for him, and found Lara’s car.

The young man, whose name has not been released, then confessed. He had been with Lara on Friday night in his house in Marracuene. The police believed that he had been paying for building work on Lara’s Costa do Sol house.

According to Lole, the man, while Lara was distracted, slipped what the police believe was motor oil into her drink which had the effect of knocking her unconscious. He then beat his victim to death.

A friend than helped him rob his victim (stealing the car and 44,000 meticais – about 690 US dollars – from her) and dispose of the body.

Sernic believes they took the body back to Costa do Sol, to make the police believe the murder took place there.
