Mozambique: MDM Congress starts on Friday

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The third Congress of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the third-largest political force in parliament, starts in Beira on Friday, bringing together 600 members for the election of the party’s new president.

The event, held over three days, will decide who will be the next president of the party, among the three candidates for the post left vacant after the death of the party founder, Daviz Simango, in February this year, congress spokesperson Maria told Lusa.

“It is the wish of all MDM members that this third congress be a moment of celebration for everyone,” Virginia declared. “We would not like at any time that this same congress would mean the destruction of the MDM,” she said, adding that the congress’ motto was, in honour of the party’s founder, “Inspired by the ideals of Daviz Simango: A stronger and more cohesive MDM”.

The candidates to succeed Daviz Simango are José Domingos, secretary general of the party, Lutero Simango, brother of the late leader and head of the MDM parliamentary bench, and Silvério Ronguane, academic and deputy who ran for the presidency of the municipality of Matola in the 2018 municipal elections.

Daviz Simango, former mayor of the city of Beira and the only president of the MDM since its creation in 2009, died on February 22 from health complications while hospitalised in South Africa.

The Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, the ruling party) holds a qualified majority of 184 of the 250 seats in the Assembly of the Republic, the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, the main opposition force) holds 60, and the MDM, six.
