Mozambique: US Ambassador pays farewell call on the President – Watch

Africa-Press – Mozambique. US Ambassador to Mozambique, Dennis Hearne, this Wednesday presented his farewells to the Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, noting that the US government would continue to support Mozambique in several areas.

The farewell meeting between Dennis Hearne and Filipe Nyusi was brief, but long enough to cover bilateral cooperation in a variety of areas, with the emphasis on the fight against terrorism, where the United States of America has provided training to the Defence and Security forces.

Having seen the drama of the insurgency at close quarters during the time he represented the US in Mozambique, Dennis Hearne mentioned some ways the country could take advantage and staunch the evil, in the context of foreign aid.

“We now have the moment of possible improvement in the context (of terrorism) because the men have had some success on the battlefield. We have also been trying to organise the humanitarian aid part. Now is the time to take advantage of these spaces to ‘breathe’, as it is the moment of successes on the battlefield in recent months, for Mozambique to consolidate its capacity to deal with this type of threats,” the US diplomat said.

Ambassador Hearne also spoke optimistically about the gas projects in Cabo Delgado.

“Even with the delay that this threat and other problems have caused, these projects will move forward and have a lot of potential to benefit Mozambicans, not only in Cabo Delgado, but in general,” he said.

Terrorism and gas projects in Cabo Delgado were not the only topics addressed at the meeting.

“We also talked about our work in the area of investments, and the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which will help in the development of agriculture and rural infrastructure,” the outgoing ambassador said.

On his arrival in the country, Mozambique had just been ravaged by cyclones, and the United States helped minimize the impact. Dennis Hearne was also in the contact group for the dialogue to implement the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration process for Renamo men.
