Africa-Press – Mozambique. Friday was World Patient Safety Day, held under the motto “Safe Maternal and Newborn Health – Act Now for Safe and Respectful Childbirth!”.
To mark the date, First Lady Isaura Nyusi urges in an official message that greater attention be paid to pregnant women and their newborns, who face many possible complications that can occur during pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum period and are also at risk of contracting Covid-19, a disease which, in pregnant women and newborns, requires more care compared to the general population.
“In this sense, as a society that values itself, we must fight for their survival with the necessary quality of life, so that both the mother and her baby can enjoy good health. Patient safety is crucial and necessarily involves a situation of reciprocal communication between the health professional and the patient and vice versa,” Isaura Nyusi writes.
According to the First Lady, it is up to health professionals to offer quality services centred on the patient, and on the patient to adopt practices that are not harmful to their health.
“We regret that complications and deaths in the period close to birth, for the mother and for the baby, remain high, despite the fact that they are mostly preventable,” the statement continues.
Isaura Nyusi also argues that the adoption of a patient safety culture requires raising awareness for the empowerment of patients, their families, health professionals, health managers and communities, through the establishment of open communication around health, especially of the mother and child.
