President Extends Condolences on Edgar Lungu's Passing

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, sent a message of condolences to the President of the Republic of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, on the death of the former Zambian head of state, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died on 5 June, 2025.

In his message, President Chapo expressed his deep consternation at the loss of the former statesman, highlighting the importance of his contribution to the democracy and stability of Zambia and the region.

“At this time of mourning and sadness, on behalf of the people and Government of the Republic of Mozambique and on my own behalf, we would like to convey our deepest condolences to the people and Government of the sister Republic of Zambia, assuring the bereaved family of our solidarity and wishing them strength to overcome the pain caused by this irreparable loss,” reads the head of state’s message.

The presidential message highlights Edgar Lungu’s legacy as a leader committed to national and regional causes. “President Lungu was a patriot who served his country as a statesman of the highest caliber, leading the Republic of Zambia towards the consolidation of political stability through multi-party democracy,” the message reads.

“The SADC region and the entire African continent will forever be grateful for the important contribution of former President Lungu to the common efforts to ensure peace and security throughout the region and the continent.”

The government and people of the Republic of Mozambique join the Zambian nation in this time of grief, paying tribute to “a leader who left his mark on the history of his country and Southern Africa” the message concludes.
