Frelimo denounces killings of party members in Cabo Delgado

AfricaPress-mozambique: The Liberation Front of Mozambique(Frelimo) says party members and supporters are being persecuted and murdered by terrorists in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

The complaint was made this Tuesday (15-06) by Luciano de Castro, first secretary of the Frelimo provincial committee in Nampula province, during a meeting with party militants.

“There [in Cabo Delgado], people are murdered if they say they belong to Frelimo or the government. They are beheaded and, if you don’t know how to pronounce some Arab words, you can also be beheaded,” he declared.

Castro did not specify how many Frelimo members were killed by terrorists in Cabo Delgado. More than 2,800 people have died since the attacks began in the province in 2017.

Call for surveillance

Sociologist Faquir Fernandes says that Frelimo’s claim is alarming and advises the party not to be complacent.

“You must be alert. As a Mozambican, I am very worried. It is a situation that must be taken seriously,” he said.

In recent years, Nampula province has been considered one of the hotspots for recruiting young people into terrorism.

Provincial secretary Castro calls for vigilance and inter-religious dialogue in response to the terrorist threat.

“Here in Mozambique, [the terrorists] use religion to divide us,” he said. “Our ecumenical relationships in Mozambique were good. I have family members who are Christians, are Muslims, and others who do not profess any religion. We met in a peaceful way and respected each other. But they want to use the Muslim religion to confuse us,” he said.
