Africa-Press – Namibia. First National Bank (FNB) Namibia has injected over N$9.3 million into the elite FNB Women Super League (WSL) for the 2026 football season.

The league is to be contested by 12 teams – two from the north, one from the coast and nine from Windhoek.

The teams will compete in earnest when the new season kicks off in January. The league is expected to conclude in May.

Speaking to The Namibian Sport, Women Super League interim chairperson Monica Shapwa says she is excited about the current development and the commitment shown by one of the country’s leading banks to the upliftment and development of women football in the country.

“I am obviously excited. Women’s football teams will now get monthly grants for travelling and administration purposes,” she says.

Shapwa says getting monthly allowances for the teams has been the leadership’s wish.

She has thanked FNB for the positive consideration.

“These are really exciting times for women’s football. However, teams are required to submit accountability reports for the continuation of the grants,” she says.

Shapwa says the sponsorship runs for the next three years, and is open for renegotiation once the sponsorship agreement comes to an end.

FNB made the announcement this week, following intense yet constructive negotiations with the Namibia Football Association (NFA).

The bank has expressed its unwavering commitment to the development and empowerment of women in sport, and women in football is no exception, it says.

In total the Super League will receive a cool N$ 9 383 772 for the next three years.

University of Namibia (Unam) Bokkies chairperson Alina Ndadi says: “It’s a good thing even though it is a continuation of the sponsor, which is good for the development of women’s football.

“Since the league was expected to start at the end of the year, we started our pre-season tournament in September. However, we only closed off because of the festive season, but will resume with training early in January.”

Though the teams have not yet been furnished with draft fixtures, Ndadi’s outfit hope to do well in the upcoming season.

Unam Bokkies ended the 2024/25 football season in fifth position, but their aim for the upcoming season is to be competitive and not mere participants.

“Our aim is really to improve and go higher,” Ndadi says.

Teams set to compete in the popular FNB Women Super League are: Unam Bokkies, Nust Babes, Arrows Ladies, Khomas Nampol, Julinho Athletics SC, Ongos SC, Beauties FC, V-Power Angels, Desert Foxes FC, African Stars Queens and Mighty Gunners.
