Africa-Press – Namibia. The Ohangwena region held a belated genocide commemoration at Onanyama village at Epembe on Friday.
Originally observed on 28 May, this event highlighted the importance of unity among Namibians.
Deputy vice president Lucia Witbooi, who officiated the ceremony, expressed her appreciation for hosting the commemoration in the region. She noted that it serves as a powerful example of unity, stating,
“Normally, when we speak of genocide, we expect the Namas and Hereroes to be the ones concerned, but having people in this region commemorating the day is a depiction of unity. The genocide was committed against our people – our brothers and sisters. This shows that as Namibians, we are united. We are one Namibia, one nation.”
Additionally, Ohangwena region governor Kadiva Hamutumwa emphasised the need for a united purpose and reminded attendees of the sacrifices made by those who resisted colonialism, including figures like Hendrik Witbooi, Samuel Maharero and Sam Nujoma.
