Africa-Press – Namibia. The governing board of the Association of African Universities (AAU) has elected distinguished Namibian academic Kenneth Matengu as its 14th president during their annual general meeting from 21 to 25 July.

At the meeting in Rabat, Morocco, Matengu secured his new role with an impressive 67.1% of the votes cast.

He will assume his new responsibilities towards the higher education landscape of the African continent in addition to his roles as the vice chancellor of the University of Namibia and president of the Pan-African University Council.

“We must fast-track the continental quality assurance framework and harmonisation to enable the creation of our African Credit Transfer System. This will increase mobility and permit recognition of qualifications from the francophone, lusophone and anglophone systems of higher education,” Matengu said

on his goals for his upcoming tenure.

Matengu will succeed the Sudanese medical scientist Saeed Osman.

The AAU is a leading advocate for institutes of higher learning on the continent with the mission of improving the quality and relevance of African education on the global stage.
