The information ministry has initiated a process that will ultimately result in the appointment of the information commissioner and their deputy.
The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) has made a call through an advert to non-governmental organisations within Namibia’s media sector to nominate qualified individuals for appointment to the selection committee responsible for recruiting the information commissioner and deputy information commissioner.
“As the custodian of the Access to Information Act (No. 8 of 2022), the ministry is committed to ensuring transparency and inclusivity in the recruitment process,” said Frans Nghitila, director of print media affairs at MICT.
He added that the “selection committee plays a crucial role in upholding the principles of access to information enshrined in the law”.
The Access to Information Act mandates that the selection committee include a nominee from a media-focused non-governmental organisation registered under Namibian law.
The nominated candidate will be appointed by the information ministry in line with Section 6 (3) of the Act.
Nghitila said the nominations must be submitted by 10 September 2025 to [email protected] or hand delivered to the ministry’s offices on the sixth floor of the Trust Building on Independence Avenue.
“We encourage all eligible media organisations to participate actively in this process to ensure that the committee reflects the diversity and professionalism of Namibia’s media landscape,” added Nghitila.
