Swapo deputy secretary general (DSG) Uahekua Herunga has emphasised the need for unity within the ruling party ahead of November’s elections.
He stressed the importance of solidarity in the face of upcoming challenges.
Herunga’s call to action comes on the back of last year’s elections, which resulted in the ruling party losing its foothold in the national assembly.
This includes the 2020 elections that cost the party several of its stronghold constituencies and local authorities.
During the party’s Kunene regional engagement on the postmortem of the last elections in Opuwo over the weekend, The Herunga stated that internal conflict could undermine Swapo’s longstanding dominance in Namibia.
“We must stand together as one party regardless of our differences. We cannot afford to be divided, especially now that we aim to reclaim the Kunene region,” he said.
He urged party members to support all party candidates who will stand for elections in November, regardless of personal preferences or feelings about the candidates.
He was referring to candidates who lost during the party primaries and may consider defecting after their defeats.
“Every candidate the Swapo party endorses becomes your automatic candidate, whether you want that person or not. We must act accordingly. This should always be the case,” he stated.
He reminded members to remain committed and begin campaigning in their respective constituencies.
He said Swapo is the only party capable of governing Namibia effectively.
Speaking at the same engagement, Kunene regional coordinator Julius Kaujova said the party aims for a complete takeover of the Kunene region.
This is after losing ground four years ago to the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM). Kaujova stated that unity and hard work are essential for reclaiming the Kunene region.
“We must ensure that the unity we are building as a team will deliver the Kunene region. We are fortunate to have experienced leaders assigned to Kunene whom we can utilise to ensure our success in these elections,” he remarked.
Currently, Swapo governs the Outjo and Kamanjab constituencies.
Sesfontein and Khorixas are under the UDF.
PDM holds dominance in the Opuwo Urban, Epupa and Opuwo Rural constituencies.
Nkurenkuru
Chairperson of the Swapo Party’s national leadership assigned to the Kavango West, Sisa Namandje, emphasised themes of unity, commitment and continued mobilisation of efforts to ensure his party’s victory during the 2025 Regional Councils and Local Authorities elections slated for November.
He made these remarks at the party’s mobilisation rally at Nkurenkuru on Saturday.
“Today is a day of unity, a day of action and a day of commitment to ensure Swapo remains the people’s choice,” he said.
The rally was attended by Central Committee and Politburo members in an area where Swapo controls all eight districts without opposition.
Namandje expressed confidence in maintaining the party’s stronghold.
“Swapo Party is the one and only party that matters in this region,” he declared.
He said there is no opposition attempting to challenge the party’s position.
Namandje praised Kavango West’s continued loyalty.
He described residents as “the loyal people behind our glorious movement”, who have supported the party through difficult times, including during the liberation struggle.
He continued to emphasise support for the party’s leader, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Namibia’s first female President.
He outlined commitments for the upcoming term.
These include improvements to healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure development and sport facilities.
Namandje pledged to combat corruption and violent crimes, particularly those against women and children.
He further called for intensive campaigning across all constituencies, town councils and village councils to ensure his party’s continued electoral success.
The rally featured a special veterans recognition ceremony, honouring liberation struggle heroes who contributed to Namibia’s independence.
Speaking at the rally, retired general Martin Shali highlighted the region’s historic significance as a former liberated area during the war for independence.
He credited local resilience and commitment for the area’s unique status.
The rally concluded with Swapo regional coordinator Elina Magano Diparo calling for unity and action.
She encouraged attendees to maintain their commitment to the party’s vision.
