– Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai has said that he was misquoted over comment on soldiers
– According to the army boss, the misquoting has some elements of mischief by some section of the Nigerian media
– Buratai said it is quite bad how some journalists go overboard to misinterpret facts and distort them
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has denied ever saying that the reign of Boko Haram is because of the lack of commitment by soldiers.
The COAS said he was misquoted by a section of the Nigerian media who “probably has some elements of mischief”, Premium Times reports.
The lieutenant general made the denial during a joint press conference he gave together with the Borno state governor, Babagana Umara, when he visited the governor.
He said: “I have never said in my remarks that the troops lack commitment to fight. It was completely wrong and I want to say it is somehow quoted out of context probably with some elements of mischief. If you carefully read my remarks, just as it was well published on our Army website you will see that there was nothing like me there was saying lack of commitment.
“Some journalists have even gone beyond that by saying that I said troops are cowards. This is far from the truth and it is unfortunate the way some journalists and newspaper houses will go to the extent of distorting fact.”
Also, the Borno state governor during the conference pledged his support for the military, saying that he would give the military all the support it needs to fight the insurgent group.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigerian Army of 112 Task Force Battalion and 22 Brigade with the help of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and village group on Saturday, June 22, had a successful operation in Kobe and Boboshe villages in Borno.
According to the press release of the army, the troops also discovered newly created camps at Dubula village with some tracks belonging to motorcycles and bicycle.
The camp was totally destroyed by the army while one of the terrorists trying to escape was neutralised.
