Africa-Press – Nigeria. The Nigerian Army has provided an account of the death of a soldier who sustained fatal injuries after being struck on the head by a mentally unstable person in Imota, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
According to a statement issued by the Army, the incident occurred on 16 November 2025 at approximately 4:00 pm, during an internal security operation.
The soldier, deployed to help de-escalate a tense situation in the community, was attacked with a heavy stick, resulting in severe head injuries.
“The soldier was struck on the head by a mentally unstable person while attempting to restore order in Imota. Colleagues at the scene swiftly neutralized the attacker and recovered the soldier’s weapon,” the statement read.
The injured soldier was immediately taken to Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
He was subsequently laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, with the Acting Commanding Officer and other officers of the 81 Division in attendance.
The Nigerian Army further conveyed condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased, acknowledging his dedication and service to the nation.
An official investigation into the incident has been launched by the 81 Division to determine the full circumstances surrounding the soldier’s death.
The statement was signed by Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Nigerian Army.
“The Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army has taken note of the viral video related to this tragic incident. While an investigation is ongoing, it is important to provide preliminary information regarding the events of that day,” the statement added.
